The Island Game
"The Island Game" is a Dungeons and Dragons variant game/campaign that I've run a few times in the past. In the island game, each player is allowed to pick a race they like. Then they are generated a number ( I like 20) of 0 level characters of that race. By the hand of God, all of these groups are dropped upon a previously deserted island with near to nothing to try and make it by. Players compete and cooperate for survival against nature, monsters and themselves.
For "The Island Game" to work correctly, one of the most vital elements is that the players be confident that the Game Master not playing favorites or being more flexible with one group than another. A way that I have done this is by making practically everything randomly generated. This assures fairness as well as making game prep easier for the GM considering he does not have too much to plan for a large number of potential choices. When I ran my games, I had all characters, starting equipment, and encounters generated by a set of random tables I developed. If you choose to Game Master a similar game, feel free to do as you will, but I'll provide for you the information I have used.
One invaluable asset I did have for running the game was a program named "Table Master" by Wintertree software. This is by no means a paid advertisement, nor am I in any way affiliated with the company or programmer, other than being a really satisfied customer. I'll provide the tables I used in the normal paper way, but I'll also put them up in Table Master format so you can simply cut and paste them, ready to use. Though TM is by no means necessary, God, does it save time effort and frustration when really complicated things need to be rolled.
