The Province of Keverton
Kast is not in fact part of Keverton, but included on this map for the purpose of orientation
Keverton is over all a nice quiet place. It's population is relatively small, and most people can be found to be familiar with most others in their towns. Many more major figures are easily known and recognized. Class distinctions are rare and not yet developed. After all, everybody from farmer to mayor has a past ancestry of wealth or nobility. Industry has developed to provide well for the citizens, yet has not so much so to promote too much excess. Money is not sought after or put at such importance yet in that even large sums of money can not yet purchase much more than the average person could. More often wealth is measured by how little you need do to live the same lifestyle. Despite this, it is not unusual for all "types" of people to socialize together. There are simply not enough "wealthy" people to form a social circle of only their kind, and most of the "wealthy" have life long friends and family of more "average" class. On the other hand, the "poor" seem not to exist at all in that there is far too much work that is need of being done, and far too many willing persons to motivate the lazy.
Keverton exists as it does for a single reason. That reason is that Renwell Keep, along with the knights from there and the Esoteric Order of Thaton protect and watch over it. A strange relationship exist between these two organizations. Both in many respects could be considered Keverton's ruling body, yet neither really is. For the most part, each city and town administrates itself. Yet Renwell knights and troops patrol the roads, and have even been known to "arrest" public officials and to take towns in time of need under martial law. These things despite that the fact that none of the towns consider the knights of Renwell keep to be their lawmakers or rulers. On the other hand, Thaton as an organization holds no control over any town, though individual members are affiliated in local governments in different ways. Regardless of this, it has seldom been known for any local official to deny even the most unusual request that occasionally comes from the order or its members. To outsiders its amazing how much power is given over to these two organizations at the least request, and how little is done with it. What puzzles practically everybody save for the members of these two groups is how they coexist and so seldom cross each other. Never has it been heard of the two groups having any difficulties with each other save for one not having enough resources available to help the other in as great a way as they might like. Often when one organization takes up an endeavor, the other offers what support it can in the form of people, items, or money. Many locals view both of these groups as their selfless protectors.
Renwell keep does maintain a small army. These troops come form the individual towns. Each town is expected to have 2% of its population ( all able bodied men) serve in Renwell Keeps army. In return for this the town has its roads patrolled, citizens protected, and "country" guarded. Most towns have little difficulty finding willing volunteers. Most town guardsmen have served in Renwell's army in the past, and are familiar with its knights and officers.
