Geographic and Astronomical Basics of Karador

First, The name of the planet that Morcron is upon is called Karador.

A major way in which Karador differs from our own Earth is that if spins opposite of earth on its axis, thus when living upon it, it appears that the sun rises from the west and sets into the east.

Secondly, Karador is slightly larger that Earth, Earth is pretty near 25,000 miles in Circumference. Karador is more near 30,000. Like earth, it in not quiet a perfect sphere, having a slightly bigger "circumference" when measured around the equator, than if measured from pole to pole.

Earths Axial Tilt is 23.5 degrees. Karador's however is only 15.6. This has a number of effects. First, Seasonal changes are far less drastic than here on earth. Secondly, the tropic of Zapheney ( to the north) and the tropic of Rahal ( to the south) are more near the equator than Earths tropic of Capricorn and tropic of Cancer. Thus, the is an even more defined "hot tropical zone". In addition to this, the poles are even a bit colder. Fortunately, though colder, far northern and southern regions have a more regular night and day.

Karador has one Moon known as Key which is quite similar to Earth's own moon. Earths moon has a rather interesting trait in that it rotates in such a way that regardless of that fact that it is rotating, we only get to see one side of it. Karador's moon rotates at a different speed, such that on different days, different features from different sides of the moon can be see. These visible features are also of significance in astrological prediction. The phrase "dark side of the moon" generally refers to it's southern pole which is never seen, because Key also has an axial tilt.

Karador revolves around a single star known traditionally throughout most cultures as Raha.

Within Raha's system, there are eight known planets of which Karador is one. Some Astronomers and Astrologers claim proof of 2 more planets which few seem capable of seeing. Many of the more Esoterically inclined insist the existence of 14 planets around Raha as was made known by an ancient and well trusted book of Arcane lore known as "Le Kardobem La Artis Keren". Many believers in this book proclaim it's infallibility and as such insist on the existence of it's 14 planets.

Between the planets of Visht and Harrau is an asteroid belt that marks the boundary between the inner and outer solar system. This asteroid belt is actually not very dense with asteroids at all, though it is the source of the relatively frequent planetary bombardment of meteorites.

Phases of the moon

Key, like earth's moon has different phases according to how light from the sun is shadowed by Karador. Charting the moon is simple over all. The lunar cycle seems to be 26 days, just 2 days short of a month. During those 26 days, the first 6 days show a Glibbous moon. For days 7 and 8 of the cycle we see a full moon. For days 9 through 14 we again have a Glibbous moon. For days 15 through 17 we see a left half moon. For days 18 and 19 we see a Crescent moon. Days 20 and 21 are the days of the New Moon. Days 22 and 23 are again a Crescent moon. Lastly we have a Right Half moon for the remaining days of 24 to 26.

For the comming year of 388 AC we can expect to see full moons of hte following dates.

Description

Prov

Solid

8,000 miles round

35 million miles

A small planet that barley qualifies as solid. Liquid may be the best category for it considering it's great rock melting temperature. No known moons

Ethr

Solid

12,000 miles round

46 million miles

A smaller, exceptionally hot planet which is thought to be composed of many acids and radiants. Thought to have 3 orbiting moons of similar composition. Moons known as Harel, Kar, and Retenta.

Vol

Solid

27,000 miles round

82 million miles

Thought to be not too different from Karador save for an exceptionally thin Carbon Dioxide atmosphere, and only a quarter of the water. Vol has 2 known moons, named Kemal and Torem.

Karador

Solid

30,000 miles round

95 million miles

Earth like in almost every way save for those factors mentioned above. One moon named Key

Visht

Solid

24,000 miles round

130 million miles

A cold planet seemingly without volcanism. Visht is essentially an ice ball with a thick toxic atmosphere. The most remarkable aspect of this planet are her many moons. As many as 85 have been charted and named. Among the most easily seen are Talem, Orien, Jaled, Pelkem and Vos

Harrau

Gas

79,000 miles round

576 million miles

Harrau is a monstrous sized gas giant that, except for it's size, it is relatively unremarkable. Being on the edge of the asteroid belt and having such a large gravity well, it is predicted that Harrau has a massive number of natural satellites that probably changes with some frequency as new ones are picked up and old ones collide, break apart and are pulled or pushed out of it's well.

Negel

Gas

78,000 miles round

2,390 million miles

Negel is another gas giant about which next to nothing is known... it's great distance restricts even basic data about it's makeup or its moons.

Temsh

Solid

13,000 miles round

3,400 million miles

Temsh is a planet who's existence is only known thanks to thamatergy. It has never been seen before save for magical scryings, and it's positions tracked by divination. Astrologers, though they can not see her, still know her relative position thanks to great past research and charting. Temsh by the same method is known to have a single moon named in memory of the mage who did the most extensive and accurate scrying of the planet "Amakaile".
