Optional Skill (NWP) for AD&D
This page is a suplemental set of rules for a FANTASY game. If you somehow ended up here doing a search for "real" occult information, your in the wrong place. If this is the case, you sould not only not waist your time reading any further, you might want to consider doing some public service to get out of the funk youve gotten yourself into.
Do
Rank 1 - 2
Philosophical Study- At this rank the student has learned many of the academic and philosophical concepts of Do. Those skilled to this degree know a great deal about what to expect with further dedication to this field of study and know some of it's secrets. Above all else, study of Do philosophy concerns itself around an abundance of interpretation about morality and potential. This rank of ability allows for interesting conversation with other students of the art as well as a understanding of the principals, procedures, and methods of practitioners.
Ranks 3 - 4
Breathing- Practitioners of Do believe it all begins with breathing. Breathing is more than a necessity for life, it is the most profound way in which man interacts with transcendent reality. Breathing take a transcendent and ancient portion of the universe into the body, assimilate a portion of it, gives back to it a portion of the breather and sends it back into the world. Breathing takes into the self a source of experience which has been around since time eternal. Breathing is also the means by which man takes most of the vital energy Chi into his body as a gift from the universe. Students at this rank of ability may, after performing deep breathing exercises, make a roll against his Do ranking and 6th sense. If both are successful he may have a bit of psychometry like insight about an experienced or imminent person, place, thing or event.
Rank 5
Meditate- Students of Do at this rank learns to enter advanced stages of meditation necessary for further development. Meditation may be done now despite the presence of ample distraction. Though meditation provides little reward in terms of game mechanics, it does provide a certain amount of in character clarity and insight for the practitioner. Kind GMs may feel inclined to repeat things said to the character in the past or remind him of events in times of ignorance. This should not however become a crutch. Meditation is not a substitute for natural slumber. Meditation is very mentally demanding, dynamic and rewarding.
Rank 6
Preparing for the Journey- It is at this point of knowledge that a novice of Do need decide to study it only as an academic matter or to pursue it as a lifestyle. Only those who accept all the below practices as a part of their life will be able to make benefit of the rank abilities listed higher than this. Those choosing to study it only academically can attain a higher rank, but will not attain any of those ranks benefits. The practices are as follows fasting
Rank 7
Martial Arts- Much of the traditional exercise and practice of a practitioner who has begun preparing for the journey is in fact intensive training in the martial arts. A serious student learns combat if he knows it or not as he learns about the flow of human motion and control of his own body. Those practitioners achieving this rank may engage in hand to hand martial combat as described in those rules as a monk. Hand to Hand rules here
Rank 8
Fasting- Due to discipline and experience the practitioner is capable in times of difficulty to go without or with less sustenance than a normal human being would. Upon reaching this level of ability characters are far less affected by hunger, being capable of doing more for longer. Characters at thins rank of ability still need food and water as any living thing, though they are far better at getting by with less.
Rank 9
Feats of Discipline- As part of their training, practitioners engage in all manner of ritual involving discomfort, pain and restraint. As a result their mental and physical resolve is strengthened. Those achieving this rank have practiced enough such that they have developed a great resilience to pain and fear. Adepts of this rank and above should have this factor considered whenever such situations become a matter of game mechanics.
Rank 10
The Sound Body- Due to the rigors that the Adept endures and the devotion to physical well-being they display, practitioners of Do at this rank reach remarkable physical condition. Aside from far better health, the Adept gains an additional +2 to saves vs Poison and Illness.
Rank 11
Beginning the Journey- It's at this point that a character stops with Do as simply a matter of martial, mental, and physical discipline and embraces it as the philosophy that will guide his life and actions. Many at this point "begin" the journey by accepting a portion of the ideal, yet are working on their complete acceptance. Only when all ideals are accepted may a practitioner progress to the next rank of Do ability. The Ideals of Do are as follows
Rank 12
Searching the Void- At this rank the practitioners mastery of his own biological functions allows him to enter a state of greatly reduced activity. His body temperature drops, breathing slows drastically and mussels relax. Only very astute observers with some experience with biological processes would find him to be truly alive. Those in this state experience little save for a reduced sense of hearing. During this state, the mind of the adept experiences an empty void, and reawakening can be very disorientating. Due to the greatly reduced biological functions, the adept in this state requires far less substance of any kind. Adepts have been known to go a week without food and water or to live easily 4 times as long with a limited about of air. This discipline is most often used by adepts to further understand transcendent reality by withdrawing from it. It has however been used for more tactical purposes.
Rank 13
Accelerated Healing- Due to the adepts superior practices for physical health in combination with increasing control of his body, he recovers form injury much more rapidly. Adepts at this rank naturally heal an additional HP of damage per day.
Rank 14
Chakra Alignment- In learning his own body and the subtle body within, the Adept learns much of other's bodies as well. Through a lengthy process (about a two hours) the adept can take a willing person and subject them to a process of massage, meditation, breathing, stretching, and exercise, during which chi is transferred. This transfer of life energy stimulates the physical well-being of the other participant. This will somewhat accelerate his healing and benefit his recovery from poison and illness.
Rank 15
The Sound Mind- At this rank the practitioner has developed mental discipline which enables remarkable resistance to mental tampering. The Adept receives a saving throw bonus of +2 against attempts to access his mind without his consent, and +5 ( not cumulative) against attempts to actually manipulate or control his thoughts. Even attacks that normally allow for no save are granted one with this level of discipline. Adepts know well that the only thing better disciplined then their body is their mind.
Rank 16
Clear Perception- Adepts at this rank find themselves with occasional glimpses of transcendent reality. Often those of this ability will find themselves aware of things about their surroundings which others fail to be capable of seeing. The ability to see the invisible as well as through illusion is not uncommon. Sight into the astral and ethereal plane occurs as well which produces visions and perceptions of spirits and the like. These senses are not dependable or available upon command. Rather they occur at the discretion of the GM, often without rhyme or reason. They are more likely to occur when an adept actually seeks them and has reason to believe that he is not perceiving things as they are.
Rank 17
Endure Heat and Cold- Practitioners at this rank have attained the ability to exert such control over their bodies that the endurance of awful heat and cold for prolonged periods is possible. Practitioners are able to invoke internal processes which help counteract these dangerous environments. Those in bitter cold have been known to be able to steam the water out of wet garments. Such procedures are not a simple feat. They do require considerable concentration. Other tasks take a second stage and are performed with less speed than would otherwise be.
Rank 18
Cleansing Spirit- At this rank the practitioner has attained the discipline to rid his body of harmful toxins and pathogens. Doing so requires that the practitioner enter a meditative state for around an hour, during which he concentrates on forcing out all harmful substances. Each hour in such meditation allows the roll of a saving throw. Success indicates success in purging that substance. Three successive failures indicates that an agent is far to entrenched to be expunged in this manner. As useful as this ability is, it does little good if the harmful substance does it's damage faster than the practitioner can cleans himself.
Rank 19
Quivering Palm- This technique represents true mastery of Chi and Do. It is commonly misunderstood as a devastating and horribly lethal attack, though in fact nothing is further from the truth. Practitioners of Do at this rank are able to focus all the chi and resonance in their person and transfer it into another my means of touch which may be in the form a punch, kiss, hug, handshake or any other such contact. Focusing away his own Chi, the practitioner of Do will be unable to use any abilities of rank 14 or greater for an entire week as it's essence is revitalized. Those receiving the Chi react in one of two ways. Those who are themselves on the path of Do or are at least loving and peaceful individuals receive the benefit themselves of the monks Rank 15 - Rank 18 abilities for near a week. Those however who harbor hate and other such dark emotions in their hearts find their very essence challenged. The effects of this vary. Many evil recipients are struck very ill and are physically incapacitated for lengths of time (weeks or months). The most tireless in their hate have been known to die of psychic exhaustion as their will to hate expends every resource fighting off the love infused into them. Those who find themselves assaulted in such way are far from doomed. Salvation from this still lay in the abandonment of hate. Those stricken down by this Chi may abandon their darkness and thus the battle with the Chi. Those who do recover often prosper with a new profound love for life.
Rank 20
Meditative Flying- The zenith of Do ability is enabling the chi within ones body to transcend physical limitations and levitate the body. Attaining this level of mastery allows a master to enter a meditative state and raise and lower his body in thin air at a rate of 1 ft every 10 seconds. Lateral movement is possible, but remarkably slow. Altitudes are limited only by time. Time limited only to biological factors which masters have remarkable control over. Concentration during this must be strong. The only thing other than meditative control that can be performed in minimal external observation and even less communication. Legends tell of ancient masters capable of levitating at speeds comparable to a man's walking speed.
